Parent Institute is a strength-based, family-centered program that provides a space for parents to learn new skills, support one another, and grow their social network.
The program currently offers the following groups:
Children’s Education and Literacy Seminars: Parents learn the importance of their role in their children’s education. They receive information about Common Core and the changing face of education, everyday strategies for boosting children’s vocabulary and literacy, homework resources, and tips for navigating the special education system and Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings.
Parent and Child Communication Seminars: Parents learn the importance of modeling, how to inspire children, and how to create teachable moments during everyday life.
Parent Support Groups: Parents discuss challenges, explore issues, offer advice, and support one another in a safe and nurturing environment.
Parent Cafés: Parents engage in structured conversations based on the Parent Café model, a nationally recognized curriculum that seeks to strengthen families.
Parent Advisory Board: Parents are given the opportunity to provide feedback about the program, give ideas for upcoming curriculum, and share needs that the program may be able to address.
Special Events: To build an even stronger community, celebrate traditions, and foster a sense a belonging, Parent Institute offers a Thanksgiving dinner and end-of-year holiday celebration to families.
Parent Institute believes in the power of community collaboration. Special guests will join selected sessions in order to enhance the services provided, including the Los Angeles Public Library, Learning Rights Law Center, and Families in Schools.
Before each session, families will join together for a family meal, an optimal time to engage in conversation, practice active listening, and share information about their day.
During each session, childcare will be provided, which will allow parents to fully engage in the curriculum.
